Exercise Guidelines
- Always check with your physician before starting any new exercise program and obtain medical clearance.
- Plan to exercise 3-5 days per week for 30 minutes a session, more as tolerated. Exercise can be broken down into several shorter segments.
- Set aside a regular time to exercise. Choose a time that works for you.
- Begin your exercise with some gentle warm up exercises and end with gentle stretching.
- Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.
- Avoid heavy meals for about 2 hours before vigorous exercise.
- Wear comfortable clothes and safe, comfortable shoes.
- Set achievable goals for yourself. Don’t ask yourself to do too much,
- Work a comfortable intensity level. You should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising. If not, cut back on the intensity.
- Don’t exercise when you are injured, sick, or running a fever.
- Stop exercise and consult your physician immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Chest pain, pain down your arm or heaviness in chest
- Persistent palpitation or uneven heartbeat
- Extreme breathlessness with light to moderate activity
- Inability to catch your breath
- Lightheadedness, nausea, extreme fatigue, numbness or excessive cold sweat
